How to Grow Your Fashion Blog

IMG_0589

Over two years ago I decided to start a blog.  Little did I know how many perks and amazing opportunities it would bring.  But growing an audience and working with designer brands does not happen over night.  It takes a lot of dedication and passion to make your blog successful.  Since I am frequently contacted from bloggers for “blogging pointers” or “tips for growing an audience,” I’ve decided to write a post on “How to Grow Your Fashion Blog.”

There isn’t a secret formula to growing your blog.  I’m constantly striving to improve my content, photography and social media outlets.  However, there are some lessons I’ve learned along the way – so here’s a few real tips to grow your fashion blog.

  • Being consistent is really important to not only grow your following but to maintain loyal followers.  I aim to write a blog post at least 4 days a week. I do have a corporate full-time job which can make this difficult sometimes.  It often means staying up late after work to write a post or waking up early on the weekends.  Everyone’s blogging schedule is different.  You have to find what works best for you and your audience.
  • I think some of the most successful bloggers are ones that are not only passionate about what they do but also engage with their audience.  Connect with your readers and answer any questions they may have.  You can also ask them for feedback at the end of an article or see what content they would like to read about next.  If your receiving a lot of questions about a particular topic, make sure to schedule a post to specifically cover what they’re asking for.  Your readers will appreciate the gesture and it will keep them coming back to your blog.
  • Utilize social media as much as possible.  I don’t think anyone would have ever found my blog when I first started if it wasn’t for Instagram.  Much like being consistent with blog post, it’s also important to share frequently to social media.  Luckily there are scheduling tools available to help you plan your post ahead of time.  I take advantage of the Reward Style App Instagram scheduler.  I also schedule Tweets and Facebook post using Hootsuite, a social media management tool.
  • Get paid for your services.  If a brand offers you clothing or products, that’s great! But don’t be afraid to ask for payment when a brand wants a sponsored or promoted piece.  Promotional pieces should be treated like advertisements,  just like magazines earn money from their advertisers to stay in business.  However, if there’s an amazing brand that you’d like to work with but they aren’t willing to pay – you can always ask them to guarantee a repost or regram of your photo.  That way your post is exposed to their followers and can help grow your following.
  • Get organized. Keeping a blog is much easier when you have it all planned out.  I like to keep an editorial calendar (like this one from Target), to make sure I stay on track.  At the beginning of each month I update my calendar and write down any upcoming post that I know I have committed to. This way I never forget about a sponsored post or double book two post in the same day.
